Leuphana University Lueneburg is a full university comprising of 3 faculties and 4 major profiles, one of which is teacher training. The department of teacher education is nationally well-known as particularly innovative, with a focus on empirical educational research and research-practice-transfer. The Professional School is also in charge of in-service teacher training.

The Institute for German Language and Literature Education is responsible for pre-service teacher training of future German language-arts-teachers in grades 1-10 and in vocational schools. It also offers in-service teacher training, especially 11 modules for improving reading instruction in secondary schools. The Institute's research activities focus on the acquisition of language and literacy in childhood and youth as well as on reading and writing instruction. The Institute coordinated the Socrates project ADORE and actually consults and evaluates the national German project: "ProLesen - Auf dem Weg zur Leseschule".
