Institute for German Language and Literature II

The Institute for German Language and Literature II at the University of Cologne is one of the leading (and biggest) institutions in Germany for pre-service teacher training of about 4.500 future German language-arts-teachers in grades 1-10 and in special education. It also offers in-service teacher training, especially in the domains of improving language skills for second-language-learners and reading literacy instruction in secondary schools. The Institute's research activities focus on oral and written language, writing and text production, the acquisition of language and literacy as well as on reading and media socialization in childhood and adolescence. Members of the Institute have coordinated large national research programmes in the domain of reading literacy and language education, where the Institute is considered as one of the most excellent national institutions in didactical research and teacher education.
