This article reports the results of a research project that focused on students’ perceptions of what they found helpful when in small-group and whole-group discussions about the subject matter texts they were assigned to read.

In this article, scholars from four European Union countries describe the policies and practices of content literacy in their countries. These descriptions reveal that although some progress is being made on the European scene, the United States continues to lead the way in research and practice related to content literacy.
